CBS DRAMA PROGRAM

Drama at Calvary Baptist School is an exciting way to explore and develop confidence and creativity! Learn theatrical skills like character development, stage presence, projection, enunciation and memorization. We strive for excellence while working together as a team to glorify God and share His love.

General information – At CBS, we believe that God can use the art of storytelling and theater to reveal truth about who He is, who we are, and how we should live in light of His Truth. Our Drama Department provides opportunities for high school students to strive for excellence as they learn about various aspects of drama and theater.

Students learn projection, enunciation, character development, script memorization, and stage presence as well as communication, teamwork and confidence. They then use these tools to develop believable characters through dialogue and physical movement.

Major performances include a Fall Dinner Theater and a full-length Spring Production. Students also participate in preschool chapel programs, dramatic skits, ministry opportunities, and trips to local theatrical performances.

Drama class is one of the most stretching and fun things you can do at CBS!

Miss Elisabeth Rineer

Drama Director

Elisabeth began studying drama from 2009-2013 as a part of a high caliber dramatic performing arts group for high school age students. She performed in multiple demo evenings and was cast in two full-length productions. Elisabeth’s Senior Project involved a team who researched, wrote and performed an original murder mystery.

Elisabeth assisted the CBS Drama Department since 2011, and she was hired as Assistant Director in 2016. She assistant-directed nine productions, including three dinner theaters before she became the Drama Director in 2017.

THE PRODUCTION

How the drama program finds scripts – Companies such as Pioneer Drama Company, Play Scripts, and Samuel French Publishing offer a wide variety of scripts. The director reads many script options and chooses a new show each semester based on the number of students, the strengths of the cast, and the audience expected.
Role selection – The students do cold reads of the script in class so the director can get a feel if they are the right choice for that role. After a few times reading through the script, the director makes casting decisions and announces the roles.
Costumes, hair, makeup – Costuming is a combined effort by the director, volunteers, and students. We rent or buy costumes from Dutch Country Playhouse, Players of the Stage, online stores and thrift stores. Hair and makeup are done by the director, alumni, and volunteers before performances.
Drama class and rehearsals – We begin memorizing, studying character development, and voice training during class in preparation for full after-school rehearsals. During rehearsals, we focus on staging, body movement, vocal expression, projection and all other aspects that make a performance great! We have technical rehearsals and one final dress rehearsal, then…it’s SHOWTIME!
Parental involvement – Parents are responsible to make sure students are present and on time for all rehearsals.  Parents are encouraged to take part in ticket sales, set-up, costuming, and breakdown for each performance.
